A mobilidade e seus perigos no Império Romano: João Crisóstomo e as aflições do exílio (403-407)

Resumo

Nosso objetivo, no presente artigo, é refletir sobre as condições nas quais ocorreu o exílio de João Crisóstomo, o bispo de Constantinopla deposto, em 403, por decisão do Sínodo do Carvalho.  Considerando que o exilado é, antes de mais nada, um viajante, pois é sempre obrigado a efetuar um deslocamento de um ponto a outro no espaço, nossa investigação tem como pano de fundo os transtornos enfrentados, no Império Romano, por todos aqueles que se lançavam em viagem, tanto por terra quanto por mar, com destaque para os que o faziam devido a uma decisão jurídica, o que acentuava a sua vulnerabilidade.  Para tanto, exploraremos o epistolário de João Crisóstomo, nossa principal fonte de informação a respeito da sua vida no exílio, numa tentativa de reabilitar o valor histórico das suas cartas, que tendem a ser tratadas com certo desinteresse pela historiografia.
